Yes, you read it right – the East Rand! Not many look towards the East when looking for places to eat. But contrary to popular belief, area like Edenvale, Linksfield, Boksburg, etc., do have some lovely places. One of the many and my favourite is the Red Door Cafe. You can read about it here.

Recently, I came across Café Bruegel, which was being touted as the best place to have Belgian waffles in Joburg. Of course I had to check it out! So last week I happened to gather a few friends and we headed for breakfast to this quaint little cafe, tucked at the corner of 8th Avenue and Horwood Street in Edenvale.

The old world decor of the place is charming and warm. The cafe is split into two sections – a cosy indoors and a semi-outdoors veranda which has been covered on all sides. I found this section to be really nice an warm and we chose to sit here. A few tables were occupied with some people enjoying a nice breakfast while a few others seemed to be conducting meetings!

The menus came quickly and after ordering some coffee, we set about deciding what to eat. From nice hearty breakfasts options to toasted sandwiches, to wraps and sweet & savoury waffles – the cafe had some great choices. However, since its the waffles were were there to try, that’s what we ordered. Not being too fond of sweet stuff, I went for the spinach and feta waffle while my friends ordered a strawberry waffle and a ham, cheese & mushroom waffle.

When our food came, all three plates looked delicious and HUGE. I was sure that none of us would be able finish any of the dishes. But boy, was I wrong. Although the portions looked big, the waffles were really light. And the toppings were delicious. The fresh strawberries topped with cream, the creamy spinach and slices of ham with grilled mushrooms and cheese – they all tasted divine and we could not stop eating until the plates were clean! The only thing we did not touch was the side salad that was served with each of the savoury waffles.

The cafe might be a little too far east for most, but if its waffles you are after, the drive will be well worth the effort.
