Jozi is flooded with all kinds of markets – from farmers’ and organic food markets to crafts and clothes markets. Some weekly or monthly while others more infrequently. But Kamers vol geskenke is nothing like any of the regular Joburg markets. It is in fact, one of the most sought after events of the year.
This market is all about creativity, originality and individuality. Each exhibitor undergoes rigorous screening and is handpicked by the organisers, ensuring that the products reflect the underlying philosophy of this market. Kamers started in 2003 with the aim of bringing creative people together by sharing, collaborating and supporting one another.
After yet another successful year at Stellenbosch, the market is finally here in Irene, Pretoria. Its popularity can easily be gauged by the hundreds of people who visited the place on Tuesday, its first day. When I reached there at 9:30am, the market was already buzzing with enthusiastic and excited shoppers who looked like they had waited an entire year pick up their goodies!
Everywhere I looked, I found beautifully designed stalls – not just a table and shelves hastily put together. Not only were the products of exceptional quality and designs, even the layout and display was stunning. Cushions, bags, ceramics, jewellery, lamps, stationary, beads, shoes – there was nothing I did not want to buy!
And the food, simply delicious and pretty too! A nice selection of fresh salads, wraps, boeries, fresh breads and some great wine and bubbly to pair them with. For people with a sweet tooth, there is much to choose from – cakes, muffins, macaroons, fudge, brownies, fresh Greek yogurt and chocolates, to name a few.
I wasn’t looking for anything specific to buy. But the vibe at the place was such that I could have just carried on browsing endlessly. I stayed for more than three hours and came back with lots of knick-knacks and plan to go back once more just for fun.
So if you have a few hours to spare, I suggest you visit this market and soak in the wonderful atmosphere and pick up a few of those Christmas pressies you are yet to buy. And the best part is that Sunday is their SALE day! So hurry up and get going before they sell out of everything.
